Two pets died in a Sussex County house fire in which an off-duty trooper and firefighter was the first to respond, officials said.
Reports of a fire came from a neighbor on on Saddleback Road in Stillwater around 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, fire officials said.
"A nearby trooper who is also a firefighter arrived on scene and reported a working fire," the Stillwater Area Volunteer Fire Company said on Facebook.
Firefighters from Stillwater, Hampton, Fredon, Andover, Blairstown, Byram, Green, and Branchville responded, with Knowlton on standby.

Three accused dealers were arrested and charged after a Sussex County traffic stop led to the discovery of heroin and crack cocaine, authorities said.
Officers stopped a car that was speeding in the left lane of Route 26 in Byram and met with the driver, William Connolly, of Morristown, on Saturday, August 6, police said.
While speaking with Connolly, officers learned that he had a glass crack cocaine pipe in his pocket, as well as other drug paraphernalia, police said.

A mason dump truck drove over a propane tank in Sussex County, causing a massive leak that took hours to repair and required an evacuation of the area, authorities said.
Fire departments in Stillwater, Fredon, and Hampton responded to the Bear Brook community in Fredon alongside numerous local emergency crews around 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 29, authorities said.
Upon arrival, the teams found that the mason dump had driven over an underground 1,500-gallon propane tank and ripped off the relief valve from the top.

A Sussex County driver was drunk and one of his passengers was under the influence following a crash on Route 206, authorities said.
Vincent A. Reinke, of Newton, crossed the double-yellow line and sideswiped a southbound vehicle on Route 206 N. in Byram on Dec. 30, Byram Township Police said Tuesday.
During questioning, Reinke appeared to be intoxicated and was taken into custody after failing a series of field sobriety tests, authorities said.

Pvt. Jamaal Mellish, 23, and the unidentified teen were arrested earlier this month after Harris' body was found buried in snow, in a wooded area off Ross Road in Byram Dec. 19, authorities in Sussex County previously said.

Firefighters put out a fire that broke out at a two-story Sussex County home over the weekend.
The blaze was reported at 3409 Rt. 94 in Hardyston Township just after 4 p.m. Saturday, the township volunteer fire department said on Facebook.
Crew members placed hand lines in operation after ensuring that all occupants had safely exited the home, authorities said.
The fire was placed under control about an hour later, and no injuries were reported, authorities said.

A COVID-19 outbreak among six teens in Sussex County has been linked to a graduation party, according to health officials who won't release the details.

Byram Driver Who Lost Control Hits Man Snow-Blowing Driveway, Police Say
A man from Byram was hit by an out-of-control car while snow-blowing his driveway, authorities said.
Christina Quinones, 33, of Byram was driving on Lackawanna Drive when she struck the man losing control of her vehicle, the NJ Herald said citing local police.
After hitting the man, Quinones crossed over the double yellow lines and struck a parked car before coming to a stop, police said.
The man, whose was not identified by authorities, was transported to Morristown Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Quinones was not charged in the incident.

A Pennsylvania man was being held in the Sussex County jail after taking off during a Stanhope traffic stop, leading officers in a high-speed chase on Route 206 into Byram and throwing cocaine out of the window of his car before crashing, authorities said.
James, A. Martin, 52, of Pocono Pines, PA, was taken to Newton Medical Center with minor scratches to his face after Monday night's pursuit, Stanhope police said.

A 2-year-old boy was fatally struck by a dump truck in Stanhope Monday morning, authorities said.

Responding Stanhope and Byram officers found two passing drivers conducting CPR on the toddler around 10:40 a.m., on Route 206 northbound near Acorn Street, Stanhope Police Sgt. William Heater said.
Police assisted with CPR until the Lakeland Emergency Squad arrived and took the boy to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Heater said.
