P.T. Barnum Circus Partner's Estate Hits Market For $6.95M In North Salem

Life at the circus was certainly different than the life lived at home for George Fox Bailey, of early Barnum & Bailey fame, at his estate in North Salem that recently hit the market for $6.95 million.

Circus lovers won't find any big tops or swirling, bright colors in the 1838 brick Greek Revival that is the centerpiece of the 25-acre property known as Autumn Farms, but they will uncover a few amenities such as a putting green and sparkling pool, that Bailey could only dream of.

Bailey's father, Hackaliah Bailey, created and ran what many consider the first circus, the North Salem Circus in the 1800s. His son continued the tradition during the Civil War and in 1875 purchased the P.T. Barnum Show.

For those who can afford the estimated $26,000 a month mortgage payment, the estate also features a Christopher Peacock farmhouse kitchen, great room with a porch and panoramic views, along with five bedrooms and six bathrooms.

Geared toward country living, the estate also includes eight paddocks and groom's quarters, two stables with stalls for 25 horses, and a heated and lit indoor rink with viewing area.

Located an hour from New York City, the estate is within minutes of the local trains and highways.

The estate is listed by William Pitt Julia B. Fee Sotheby's International Realty. The listing agent is Joanna Rizoulis at (917) 359-7885.
