Shahid’s brand-new Hoboken Family Pharmacy harkens back to the days when pharmacists knew their customers, before the chains began dropping mini-department stores disguised as pharmacies throughout the area.
“We want to be here and take care of the neighborhood,” said Shahid, owner and head pharmacist of the new drug store on First Street between Willow and Clinton.
For instance, working with a pharmacy partner, Shahid can create personalized compounds for his customers. Should a pregnant woman prefer not to take an assortment of pills, technician Usmam Chaudhry can prepare a cream. Should a child need a medicine usually given to adults, a lower dosage can be prepared. Even in cases of a canine emergency, the pharmacists can whip up a turkey- or chicken-flavored treat with the medicine mixed in.
Because of its intimate size, Shahid and Chaudhry can spend more time talking to people, building relationships and learning each customer’s medical needs.
The shop is also conveniently positioned beside PromptMD Urgent Care Center, whose visitors can simply walk next door to fill their prescriptions.
Shahid keeps his shelves stocked with a full array of health and beauty essentials, DME equipment, allergy, cold and sinus medications, and offers free delivery and same-day ordering.
He’s also tapping into the demand for organic and homeopathic medicines, such as Burt’s Bees products, New Chapter vitamins — which are 98% organic — a line of herbo-organic remedies for pregnant women and new mothers, and Ideal Health supplements, a dietary supplement designed specifically for individual clients’ bodies based on a comprehensive systems analysis.
“Any type of tailored medications, we can do,” said Shahid, who got his PharmD from Rutgers and MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University. “We go out of our way to meet the needs of our customers.”
