Alzheimer's Association Offers Educational Programs In Hudson Valley

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Caring for those suffering from Alzheimer's Disease can be tough for the caregiver. That's why the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter will offer a variety of free educational events in Dutchess and Ulster counties.

The programs include:

  • Effective Communication Strategies: As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia's progress, the ability to lose words is lost, and families need new ways to connect. This program explores how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, how to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia and strategies to help you communicate at every stage of the disease. The program is scheduled for: 2:30-4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 at the Alzheimer’s Association office, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103 in Poughkeepsie.
  • Know the 10 Signs, Early Detection Matters: Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease is important because it allows treatment to start earlier as well as providing more time for families to plan for the future. This program will be offered at these times and locations: 1-2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, Howland Public Library 313 Main St., Beacon; 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, Pleasant Valley Free Library 1584 Main St., Pleasant Valley; 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, Saugerties Public Library 91 Washington Ave., Saugerties, and 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, Ellenville Public Library & Museum 40 Center St., Ellenville.
  • Understanding and Responding to Dementia-related Behavior: Learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Class will be from 2:30-4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, Alzheimer’s Association Office, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie.
  • Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease: An educational program providing information on detection of Alzheimer’s disease, risks, causes, stages of the disease and more. This program will be offered at these times and locations: 6:30-7:30 Thursday, Feb. 11, Highland Library 30 Church St., Highland; 2-3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, Esopus Library 128 Canal St., Port Ewen, and 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, Elmendorph Inn, 4562 Route 9, Red Hook.
