HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park will commemorate United Nations Day with a free public forum at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24.

The program -- “The Roosevelts’ United Nations: Then & Now” – will take place at the Henry A. Wallace Center at the historic site.

On the panel of experts are: moderator Linda Fasulo, U.N. correspondent for NPR, NBC News and MSNBC; Stephen C. Schlesinger, author of “An Insider’s Guide to the U.N.” and a fellow with Century Foundation; Gillian Sorensen, author of “Act of Creation: The Founding of the United Nations,” a senior adviser and national advocate for the United Nations Foundation; and assistant secretary-general for external relations at the United Nations from 1997 to 2003.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter.

According to the library/museum, the world organization was truly a creation of Franklin Roosevelt, who saw it as a way to ensure lasting peace and the expansion of freedom around the world.

His legacy, it said, was carried forward by Eleanor Roosevelt, who, as the first woman member of the United Nations’ American delegation, helped guide the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that the body adopted in 1948.

The discussion will explore the creation and history of the United Nations, its successes, failures, and future challenges.

Registration for the forum is required.

To register, call (845)-486-7745. For more information about the library and its programs, call (800)-337-8474 or click here .
