Hurricane Jose's Strange Path May Take It Toward East Coast

The latest hurricane churning in the Atlantic could strengthen as it takes an out of the ordinary, looping path that may bring it near the Bahamas and the East Coast late this weekend into next week.

Jose, now a Category 1 storm and expected to remain at hurricane intensity in the Western Atlantic, was churning between the Bahamas and Bermuda Wednesday morning.

Jose, now a Category 1 storm and expected to remain at hurricane intensity in the Western Atlantic, was churning between the Bahamas and Bermuda Wednesday morning, the National Hurricane Center said.

Computers model disagree on where it's headed. The U.S. model has its path toward the mid-Atlantic and East Coast. The European model has Jose heading north and staying far enough away from the coast to have a significant impact. But models can have trouble forecasting hurricane tracks which are odd, like Jose's.

Given the significant spread between forecast tracks from the various models, and the quirkiness Jose has exhibited since becoming a hurricane on Sept. 6, the National Hurricane Center, in a rare statement, added the disclaimer that the latest projected path for the storm is a low-confidence forecast.

Jose is currently the only Atlantic hurricane with the rest of the basin quiet. Hurricane season ends Nov. 30.
