Coates who was defeated in May's school board elections uses the office in his role as program coordinator for the Upward Bound program at Marist College.

Upward Bound is a federally funded program that helps students prepare for college. The program serves high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.  Marist College Upward Bound currently serves over 100 youths from two senior high schools located in Dutchess and Orange counties.

Coates said his office had nothing to do with being a school board member, having worked as program coordinator since 2005.

"The Board of Education values the long standing Marist College Upward Bound Program and the Marist College Liberty Partnerships Program," the resolution said. "The Board of Education continues to welcome the coordinators for these programs to utilize the official Poughkeepsie City School District’s Facilities Use Form Process for desired after school programs for district students in regular classroom spaces within the district for the 2017-2018 school year and beyond."
