WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. -- A mural depicting the Civil War that features a Confederate flag will be removed from Fishkill Plains Elementary School, the Wappingers Central School District announced.
The school district made the announcement following a meeting of its school leadership team. The discussion was held in executive session which lasted for the duration of the meeting, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal . The school district has not responded to numerous requests for comment.
Along with a Confederate flag, the mural features an American flag, Confederate soldiers, Union soldiers, President Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation.
According to the Poughkeepsie Journal , the district initially postponed the meeting due to questions over compliance with the state's Open Meeting Law. The district gave no reason for going into executive session at the meeting, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.
