After endless hours of exhaustive research and more than five years of renovations, the former New York City advertising executive is ready to move on to his next project. He listed the four-bedroom, three-bath property at 12 Par Court with Douglas Elliman agent Margaret Harrington for $2.6 million.
“I fell in love with the great camps of the Adirondacks and Rockies,’’ Buckley said. “And the lifestyle of people like the Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, and J.P. Morgan. They went hunting in the day and had black tie dinners at night. It was captivating to me.”
Buckley renovated the Carmel property while staying true to the time period in which the house was built in 1930. He renovated the home with superior 20th century craftsmanship and detail, while also updating it with the amenities homeowners crave in the 21st century. “When I found it 10 years ago, it had lost that sense of being a fabulous camp retreat from the 1920s and 30s,’’ Buckley said. “I wanted to go in and do something that reflects the period. The house transports you.”
The home is also far closer to New York City than the camp homes in the Adirondacks, Catskills and other areas of upstate New York. “Had it not been in this location, I never would’ve done a project like this,’’ Buckley said. “It was an aligning of the stars.”
The house includes 3,792 square feet of living space. The chef’s kitchen features Vermont slate, Viking and Sub Zero appliances, and pine cabinetry. The dining room provides grand lake views, and the formal living room includes a massive stone fireplace.
The master suite with lake views includes a private balcony and luxury bath with a hammered copper tub and steam shower, custom built-in woodwork and vaulted ceilings.
Custom-made outbuildings were constructed to house antique cars, and include radiant heat to protect valuables, woodworking shop and storage for recreation equipment, such as canoes and kayaks. A fire pit tucked in the edge of the woods completes the camp experience.
Amenities at Sedgewood Club include tennis, golf and swimming.
The home has been featured in Architectural Digest, and is replete with antiques Buckley discovered on trips to national and international destinations. The antiques are not part of the property’s list price, but Buckley might entertain offers for some of them.
“It’s exactly what it would have been like a hundred years ago, but with the amenities of today,’’ Harrington said. “There’s not a single television that is visible. It’s like visiting a museum. Every time I visit the house there’s some new detail that emerges.”
