Gareth Rhodes, who was an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announced he plans to challenge Faso, who is in his first term, in next November's election. The district includes a part of Dutchess County.
Rhodes, who left the governor's office to attend Harvard Law School, said he plans to move to the district later this year, according to Politico. Rhodes grew up in Kingston.
Rhodes has never had political office. He told Politico he plans to tie Faso with President Trump at every turn.
Protestors gathered outside Faso's offices in Kinderhook and Kingston Friday to protest his support for the American Health Care Act, which repeals portions of the Affordable Care Act. Faso said he voted for the bill because the Affordable Care Act had failed in its promises to the American people.
The 19th district includes Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Ostego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties.
