Dr. Henry M. Kurban, who headed the county’s Department of Behavioral and Community Health (DBCH), is leaving to work at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in upstate Cooperstown, where he completed his postgraduate internship work.

His resignation is effective Friday, Sept. 23.

According to County Executive Marc Molinaro, a search for Kurban’s replacement is now under way.

In the meantime, pending the state Department of Health’s approval, the county will appoint an acting commissioner from within the department, Molinaro said.

Kurban, who joined the department in January, is the former health director for the Florida Department of Health -- Charlotte County Health Department in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He praised the county for its “very talented group of professionals serving the community in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health.”

The breadth of the county’s programs and service is, Kurban added, “wide-ranging and impressive."

“It is clear the county is on track to achieve (Marc Molinaro’s) ambitious goal of being the healthiest county in New York State within 10 years,” he said.

While grateful to have been part of the county’s vision, Kurban said Monday that he was making the move because of his desire to focus on his passion -- “direct patient care.”

His new role, he said, “better suits my interests and the needs of my family.”
