RHINEBECK, N.Y. -- Snow from the Nor'easter was too much for the roof of the Williams Lumber store on Route 9, causing it to partially collapse around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Rhinebeck Fire Department officials said.

The store, located at 6760 Route 9, received significant damage when the roof crashed into the store, said Henry A. Campbell, public information officer for the Rhinebeck Fire Department.

One person was pinned under the collapse, but was quickly freed and did not receive any major injuries, Campbell said.

When firefighters arrived it was determined that all employees and customer had safely evacuated the building, including the person reported pinned.

Coincidentally, a member of the Rhinebeck fire department, Firefighter Bill Vickery, was shopping in the store at the time and assisted in the safe evacuation, Campbell said.

Central Hudson was notified to respond to shut off electric service to the building and the Rhinebeck Building Inspector was on the scene. The store was closed and will remain so for an undetermined period, Campbell added.

The section of the roof collapse was approximately 125-feet-by-30-feet, he said.

"The snow from Tuesday's storm was just too much for the roof to handle" Campbell said.

Assisting on scene was the Dutchess County Sheriff's patrol.
