POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- A Poughkeepsie man that fled the scene of a stabbing at 130 Mansion St., in the City of Poughkeepsie early Wednesday and was killed in a double-fatal crash a short time later on the Mid-Hudson Bridge has been identified, according to the City of Poughkeepsie Police.

The incident began around 2:30 a.m. when a City of Poughkeepsie police officer was getting gas at the Mobil gas station across from City Hall and observed a vehicle traveling west on Mansion Street at a high rate of speed, said City of Poughkeepsie Police Det. Lt. Matt Clark.

Due to road conditions and the officer being out of his vehicle, he was unable to follow the vehicle, which made a left onto Columbus Drive going south towards the Mid-Hudson Bridge, said Clark.

A short time later, the department received a 911 call reporting a woman stabbed in front of 130 Mansion St. The same officer from the Mobil gas station responded and found a 39-year-old Hyde Park woman with a stab wound to her neck, according to Clark. She was transported to a local hospital where she underwent surgery and is listed as being in very critical condition, Clark said.

A 2013 Nissan Altima driven westbound by Steven A. Vaughan, 32, of Poughkeepsie then crossed the dividing barrier and struck a 2008 Ford Focus driven by Mark Ashby, 50, of Accord, in the eastbound lane of the Mid-Hudson Bridge, said state police.

Vaughan, the man police say fled the scene of the stabbing, and Ashby died at the scene. A passenger of the Ford Focus was transported to Westchester Medical Center with facial and internal injuries, state police reported.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Vaughan was involved in the stabbing incident in the City of Poughkeepsie prior to the accident, state police said.

The accident is being investigated by the New York State Police.
