POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum’s stand on the fight against terrorism is creating a social media frenzy, according to a report in the Poughkeepsie Journal.

According to the report, Blarcum -- reacting to the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif. -- posted a plea on Facebook urging licensed gun owners to exercise their right to carry firearms in public.

Since then, gun advocates and more than a dozen of New York’s sheriffs have weighed in on the subject, the Journal reported. Gun-control advocates, however, oppose Blarcum’s campaign, the report said.
