Apolonio Martinez, 24, is charged with second-degree forgery, a felony, while Patricia Aragon Cruz, 33, is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, also a felony, police said.

After being arraigned in Pleasant Valley Town Court, Aragon Cruz is being held on $10,000 bond. Martinez was arraigned in LaGrange Town Court and released, police said.

State police say the investigation started with a call from a Beekman man who told police he'd given a check to a woman last October that she said was lost. The Beekman man later learned it had been cashed by another person, police said.

An investigation showed the two defendants cashed the check after forging the payee's signature, police said.
