One firefighter was injured in a massive, two-alarm blaze that heavily damaged a single-family home in Red Hook and sent the homeowner to the hospital for anxiety-related issues.

Red Hook firefighters responded to a report of smoke around 11:30 p.m. Sunday at 36 Spencer Drive, according to Red Hook Asst. Chief Shawn Ball.

Arriving firefighters noticed thick black smoke and called for a second-alarm which brought out more than 30 firefighters from surrounding stations.

The fire, which started in a screened in patio dining area, where a grill was located, moved quickly to the attic, making it difficult to access the flames.

Firefighters from Tivoli, Rhinebeck, Claremont, Livingston, Rhinecliff, Germantown, Pine Plains and Milan assisted at the scene.

One firefighter, who was having a hard time breathing, was taken to Northern Dutchess Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters put the fire out around 1 a.m., with Red Hook on the scene until at least 5 a.m. to monitor for any flare-ups.

According to a Red Hook officer on the scene, Dutchess County Fire Investigation found the fire was accidental.
