The two-alarm fire, which began around 10:31 a.m., Friday, at 232 Mansion St., began in the basement of the building and spread up to the first and second floors through "balloon-type" walls, said City of Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Mark Johnson.

Johnson said the fire, which is still under investigation, appeared to be electrical in nature, also spread to the attic area and left the home with substantial smoke and fire damage.

The Red Cross was on scene to help the residences.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 11:15 a.m., he added.

No children were at the home at the time of the fire, Johnson said.

The city was assisted on scene by Arlington and Fairview Fire Departments and Mobile Life.
