State Police were dispatched to a stretch of Route 28 in Shandaken at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Monday afternoon, where there were reports of a driver who had lost control of a Kia going west, crossing into the eastbound lane and striking an Ulster County Area Transit Bus, which was traveling east.

Police said that the driver, Highland resident Barbara Hyde, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her passenger was transported to the Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The operator of the bus - which was unoccupied - was not injured.
