Gunfire Breaks Out During Group Fight In Poughkeepsie, Police

Gunfire broke out during a fight in broad daylight in Poughkeepsie early Thursday afternoon, June 28.

Police received a phone call around 1:30 p.m. regarding shots fired at 120 Hudson Ave., near Building 1, Detective Sgt. George Camacho of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department said.

The caller reported that the shooter and several subjects left the scene in a green, Ford Explorer. A short time later, the vehicle was located on Dubois Avenue by officers. All of the subjects inside the vehicle were detained without incident and brought to the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department for further investigation, Camacho said.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that there was a fight between two rival groups. During the fight, one of the subjects exited from the Explorer and fired several shots at the other group. No one was hit during this gunfire.

The shooter and several other subjects then fled the scene where a short time later their vehicle was stopped on Dubois Avenue by Officers.

The firearm used in this incident has been recovered.

Yassir Cruz-Rivera, identified by police as a 23-year-old Puerto Rican male, has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a Class C felony. Cruz-Rivera was also charged with criminal use of firearm in the second degree, a Class C felony.

Cruz-Rivera is currently being held in the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department cellblock pending his arraignment at City of Poughkeepsie Court.
