In the scam that's been on the rise over the past few days, a scammer calls a victim to claim a relative has been hurt, arrested or kidnapped and needs money immediately.
The latest version of the scam involves claiming a loved one has been kidnapped and that the victim must send or bring money to a designated location.
In one recent instance, scammers contacted a local couple separately and convinced each of them that their spouse had been kidnapped. The perpetrators were able to link their phones using some kind of technology.
Residents are advised to not panic and contact law enforcement if receiving such a call. Police also advise not making deals with the perpetrators and to not meet up with anyone they don't know.
If someone calls alleging a relative has been hurt, kidnapped or jailed, then it should be confirmed before sending any money.
