Six families are without a home Monday following a fire in a multi-story residence on Kent Road in Wappingers Falls, according to New Hackensack Fire Chief Anthony Marquez.

The fire, which started around 2:46 a.m. Sunday, began in the basement area of the building, causing damages to most of the units, he said.

"Some of the apartments don't have power, some don't have water making all the units uninhabitable," Marquez added.

Firefighters were able to douse the blaze within about 40 minutes and to contain the blaze to the basement area, he said.

No one was injured during the fire.

The Town of Wappinger closed the residence due to damage to the building's power and water lines. Marquez said residents will not be able to return until the landlord makes the needed repairs.

New Hackensack was assisted by the Hughsonville Fire Department and the Village of Wappingers Falls Fire Department.

The American Red Cross is providing aid to the displaced families.

The investigation into the fire is being handled by the Dutchess County Fire Investigative Unit and the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, Marquez said.
