Gilberto Nunez, whose practice was located in Kingston, was tried in Ulster County Court, Hoovler said.
Nunez was convicted of one count of grand larceny, one count of insurance fraud and five counts of falsifying business records, all felonies, the district attorney said.
Nunez now faces a maximum of 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison on each of the grand larceny and insurance fraud convictions, and a maximum term of 1 1/3 to 4 years on each of the five counts of falsifying business records.
At the trial, prosecutors argued that Nunez had stolen $8,400 from the Preferred Mutual Insurance Company by filing false documents in support of his claim for payment on an insurance policy for a 2014 fire at a building he owned at 381-385 Washington Ave. in Kingston.
Hoovler, who was appointed as special prosecutor in the case, said that Nunez falsely claimed to have lost rental income because of the fire.
There were no paying tenants in the building at the time of the blaze, prosecutors argued.
According to Hoovler, the dentist had previously been convicted of two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
He faces a maximum sentence of 2 1/3 to 7 years in state prison for each of those convictions.
Prosecutors proved, Hoovler said, that Nunez had possessed -- with intent to defraud -- a false CIA identification card and false letter purportedly from the CIA, Hoovler said.
The district attorney also investigated charges that Nunez had made false statements while applying for a pistol permit.
Nunez is facing charges of first-degree perjury and making an apparently false statement in that case, Hoovler said.
Nunez is to appear in Ulster County Court on Thursday, Nov. 10, for a pre-trial hearing on those charges.
According to a report by The Daily Freeman, earlier this year a jury acquitted Nunez of second-degree murder charges relating to the 2011 poisoning death of 44-year-old Saugerties resident Thomas Kolman, his ex-lover’s husband.
Nunez remains free on bail, The Daily Freeman reported.
Participating in the investigation were the City of Kingston police and the Town of Ulster police, Hoovler said.
