HYDE PARK, N.Y. – Robert Bentley Hinz, a resident of Hyde Park for 51 years, died Saturday, June 11. He was 91.
Born May 13, 1925, in Staten Island, he was the son of Myrtle Malvina Kiena and Oscar Valentine Hinz.
He was a retired special education teacher for the Hyde Park Central School District and a passionate poet, author, singer and actor. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy as an aviation radioman, 3rd Class, receiving an American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Korean Service Medal.
He received his B.S. from Wagner College and M.S. from SUNY New Paltz. He was a member and a tenor in the choir of the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park, where his golden voice resounded for many years.
He is survived by his three children, Robert A. Hinz and wife Barbara, of Danbury, Conn.; Daniel M. Hinz and wife Linda, of Syracuse and Kathleen A. Hinz-Shaffer; five grandchildren, Dr. Erica Kaitlin Hinz (Duet) and husband Vincent Duet of New York City, Daniel James Hinz-Shaffer and Devon Robert Hinz-Shaffer of Hyde Park, Gregory Daniel Hinz of Waltham, Mass. and Krista Alexandra Hinz of Phoenix, Ariz.; great-grandson, Theodore Robert Duet of New York City; nephews, Randolph K. Hinz Jr. and wife Rebecca Jane Hill of Petaluma, Calif.; John McAulay and Irene Reardon of Ocean City, N.J. and Gene McAulay of Edison, N.J.; grandnephew, Frank Reardon, wife, Isabelle and son, Ozzie; and grandnieces, Karen Ann Reardon of Matawan, N.J. and Mary Ellen Reardon and son Owen of Redbank, N.J.
He was predeceased by his wife; two brothers, Randolph K. Hinz Sr. and Alfred Hinz; niece, Susan L. Hinz; and son-in-law, Donald J. Shaffer.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life, with U.S. Navy Honors, will be conducted at noon Sunday at the United Methodist Church of Hyde Park, Route 9, Hyde Park. A reception for fellowship and fond memories will be conducted immediately following in the Fellowship Hall of the Church.
