RED HOOK, N.Y. -- Lawrence Schlemmer, 69, of Red Hook, died Friday, Oct. 7.

He was born July 5, 1947, in New York, the son of the late Joseph A. and Beatrice (Cooke) Schlemmer Sr.

He was a 1965 graduate of Rhinebeck High School and he graduated from Dutchess County Community College with his associate's degree in 1967.

Growing up, he was a Boy Scout in Troop 101 of Schultzville, attaining Eagle Scout in 1965. In September 1967, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, having served in Korea during the Pueblo incident. He was honorably discharged in 1970.

Following his discharge from the Army, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Rhinebeck, retiring in 2002 after 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Denise; two sons, John Schlemmer and Eric Schlemmer; and brother, Joseph Schlemmer Jr. and his wife Nancy.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes in Rhinebeck. Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rhinebeck Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made for its research of pancreatic cancer to The Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714.
