Carol Hynning Smith, 71, Of Rhinebeck

RHINEBECK, N.Y. -- Carol Hynning Smith, of Rhinebeck, died Saturday, Aug. 27. She was 71. 

She was born Dec. 20, 1944, in Washington, D.C., to Martha Hamaker Hynning and Clifford James Hynning. 

She had a 35-year career in art history as curator, cataloguer and author of numerous books. From 1988 until her retirement in 2003, she worked in New York at the Museum of Modern Art, Department of Prints and Illustrated Books where she was the author of "Illustrated Books from the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art" and co-author of "The Prints of Louise Bourgeois."

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Pierce R. Smith; cousin, Ralph Hamaker; several nieces, nephews and Godchildren, Kimberly Henderson, Taylor Henderson, Dana Smith, Jack Smith, Katy McCall, and Pierce McCall; and numerous lifelong friends, including Mary Olivere and Jean Tisne. 

There will be a celebration of her life at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 at the Church of the Messiah, 6436 Montgomery St., Rhinebeck. There will be a reception following the celebration in the parish hall at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to the Food Bank at the Church of the Messiah, Rhinebeck or to the Starr Library.
