Calvin W. Shaw, 83, Of Hyde Park

HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- Calvin W. Shaw, of Hyde Park, died on Tuesday, Dec. 6. He was 83.

Born on March 22, 1933 in Rochester, he was the son of the late Frank C. and Alethea Warren Shaw. After attending Rochester public schools, he graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Indiana University, and later, Union College, where he obtained an M.S. degree in Operations Research. 

After graduating college, Shaw served in the United States Army. After being discharged, he began employment with Western Publishing in Poughkeepsie, where he worked for 25 years. Following research and development in color reproduction, he became manager of the Quality Laboratory, where he was responsible for the quality control of materials, primarily paper and adhesives. Shaw later expanded his laboratory to add wastewater and emissions analysis and controls, working closely with the EPA and DEC. 

Shaw was an active member of many international graphic arts and technical societies. On June 23, 1956 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, he married the former Betty J. Kroemer, his loving wife of 53 years. Mrs. Shaw predeceased him in 2009.

He is survived by sons, C. Clinton Shaw, and his fianceé, Ana Cruz, Warren B. Shaw; grandson, Nickolas L. Ferretti; great-grandson, Lochlan S. Ferretti. In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by two sisters, Dorothea Spiegel and Sylvia Hilliker.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no viewing or funeral service. His cremains will be inurned in the Columbarium at Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Hudson Valley Region, 121 Executive Drive, New Windsor, NY 12553 (845-440-2500, www.cancer.org).
