Water-Withdrawal Applicants Exempted From Environmental Review

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- A new state law has increased the number of entities that must seek a permit if removing more than 100,000 gallons of groundwater or surface water daily. However, the law exempts Department of Environmental Conservation staff from conducting any environmental review of any application.

According to Poughkeepsie Journal, the DEC published an announcement of a new permit application by IBM to continue taking 86.4 million gallons of water daily at its Town of Poughkeepsie plant. No environmental review was conducted, nor was a hearing schedule.

The application by IBM accounts for the largest maximum withdrawal of water in Dutchess or Ulster counties.
