New NYSEG Scam Prompts Police Warning To Dutchess Residents

Local elected officials are cautioning residents to be wary of scammers who have recently targeted homeowners in the Hudson Valley using NYSEG as part of an elaborate cover.

A North Salem resident recently received a phone call from a someone claiming they were an employee of NYSEG, Somers Town Supervisor Rick Morrissey warned. Despite being from a scammer, the caller ID read NYSEG followed by an 800 number (800-572-1111).

The person on the other end of the line proceeded to tell the resident that they were in danger of having their electricity turned off within the hour and that they should have received advance notice 10 days prior.

In the North Salem incident, the victim asked several questions to try and verify the NYSEG employee’s identity, though the scammer could not answer and instructed the woman to “call the Corporate Office, where the request was filed,” to discuss the matter further, providing an 866 number to contact.

After calling the new number (866-978-8510) - where the caller receives a message saying “you have reached NYSEG” - the victim was given a reference number and were told to make payment within 45 minutes to a location in Auburn or the electricity would be disconnected.

Officials said that the scammers proceeded to hang up when further probed with inquiries. NYSEG was later contacted and confirmed that it was a scam and all accounts were up to date.

Anyone that receives a call like this has been instructed to hang up and contact local law enforcement to report the potential scam.
