Jason Kindopp, 48, of New York City, was found on the side of a cliff near the Route 9D tunnel, said  Randy Simons, spokesman for the department.

Breakneck, which spans the border of Philipstown in Putnam County and Fishkill in Dutchess County, is considered one of the most challenging hiking spots in the area.

State park police, Department of Environmental Conservation Rangers and local emergency response teams jointly developed a recovery plan to retrieve Kindopp's body which was tangled in thick brush and trees, he said.

The response teams rappelled approximately 30 feet down the side of the cliff into extremely dangerous and tough terrain, gently freed and ultimately were able to transport the body back up the trail to a parking lot where the Putnam County Medical Examiner took custody, Simons added.

An investigation surrounding the circumstances is currently underway.
