Courtesy of a donation by Odin’s Fund - a nonprofit organization started in 2000 that assists working dogs by supplying first aid training, guides and kits to agencies - K9 Units in the entire office will now have “quick access to the Narcan,” according to Lt. Frank LaMonica Jr.
LaMonica said that Narcan has been available and utilized for narcotics detection K9s for years, but was never readily accessible, noting that the new Narc Cases are specifically designed to carry on their person, allowing K9 handlers to have quick access to the potentially life-saving drug.
Narcan - also known as Naloxone Hydrochloride - is indicated for the emergency treatment of suspected opioid overdose, according to drugs.com. It is intended for immediate administration as emergency therapy in settings where opioids may be present.
In a statement, LaMonica said that through the donation, “all of the K9 teams, not just the Narcotics Detection K9s will soon be able to carry and have quick access to Narcan for their K9 partners in case they somehow come into contact with narcotics while performing their duties.”
“Narcotics detection K9’s are trained in finding illegal substances including Heroin and other Opiate based substances which are currently rampaging through our society. They are dangerous and even deadly for people and the same goes for canines. The availability for emergency responders to now have access to and administer Narcan has been invaluable, saving many people’s lives.”
