Many of the cats, who were rescued after a Dutchess County SPCA humane law enforcement official became aware of the situation, are in need of medical care, said Wayne Mabey, acting executive director of the Dutchess County SPCA.
The woman, who was hoarding the cats, will be appearing before the court in East Fishkill for a probation violation stemming from previous animal cruelty charges, Mabey said.
“Cases like these are never easy," said Mabey, “But the cats will now receive the medical care and TLC that they deserve. We are working quickly to meet the needs of the cats which can be anything and everything from gentle reassurance to critical care surgery.”
Mabey estimates the costs associated with this case to exceed $20,000. To help cover that cost, Mabey is asking the public to help by donating any amount they can.
"Even five dollars will help us take care of the cats," he said.
The money is needed so the agency can replenish vaccines and other supplies depleted by the arrival of the 67 additional cats.
The shelter also is in need of Purina Cat Chow and any type of canned cat food, he added.
"It was quite a job to round up all of the cats," Mabey said. "Some are still frightened, some are already friendly, but quite a few are sick and in need of medical treatment."
All are currently in isolation and have been given vaccines.
