Take A Step Back On This Date In History With Westchester Medical Center

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- For more than a century, Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, has been vital to the Hudson Valley region. Founded as an Army hospital in 1917 to care for the victims of the global influenza epidemic, WMC has been meeting the health needs of the Hudson Valley ever since. As they celebrate 100 Years of Advanced Care in 2017, the hospital is stepping back a century in American history and taking a look at our country’s defining moments during its inaugural year.

The gold standard by which literary, musical and journalistic works are judged, the Pulitzer Prize has recognized the contributions of America's authors for 100 years. Established in 1917, the award was created out of a request in newspaper publisher Joseph Pultizer's last will and testament. In addition to the foundation of a journalism school at Columbia University, he sought to create an award that would recognized literary achievements of the country's greatest writers.

A century later, the prize is still awarded in 21 categories each April by a 19-member board at Columbia University. The committee awards writers in categories ranging from fiction and poetry to breaking news reporting and feature writing. The Pulitzer Prize has been awarded to some of the most venerable names in American writing; Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, David McCullough and others have all won the award at least once.

Much like Pultizer Prize winning writers, the doctors and staff at Westchester Medical Center have garnered national recognition for more than 100 years. From emergency services to holistic care, WMCHealth Network has created a legacy of care in the community.
