The charity, in existence since 2012 and based in Wappingers Falls, cooks and delivers two trays of homemade food each week to the families of caregivers with cancer in many parts of the Hudson Valley including Dutchess County and parts of Ulster, Orange and Putnam.
Founder Krista Jones, a Hopewell Junction resident and avid cook, came up with the idea of cooking for the families of local caregivers diagnosed with cancer after a good friend of hers got sick.
The dream to help the caregivers of children started with six families and has grown into helping over 200, she said. "We have fed more than 1,000 people since Sparrow’s Nests’ inception and, with the help of our local business community, we have not turned away a single family fitting our mission statement."
All food is prepared by a team of volunteers in the charity's Health Department approved kitchen in Hopewell Junction.
Not only do local families pitch in and help cook, but many participate in other fundraisers throughout the year. In November 2015, 160 Sparrow’s Nest Runners, dubbed “Team Sparrow” participated in the Disney Wine and Dine Marathon in Orlando, FL. In 2016, they will participate in the Star Wars Half Marathon – The Dark Side, April 14-17, also in Orlando.
