Radio-Controlled Planes Take Flight At Rhinebeck Aerodome

RED HOOK, N. Y. -- The Mid-Hudson Radio-Control Society is celebrating 50 years of the R/C Jamboree with a special weekend of events Sept. 9-11 that includes the Jamboree, an anniversary dinner and a special award for the Old Rhinebeck Aerodome, which has hosted the annual event.

This year's R/C Jamboree at Old Rhinebeck Aerodome recognizes the 50th anniversary of the event with more than 100 model and vintage radio-controlled airplanes.

More than 100 giant-scale and radio-controlled model airplanes will be flying from 11 a.m. to dusk Friday, Sept. 9, and 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10 and 11, just prior to the full-scale airshows at the Aerodome on both days. The airshow starts at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, there were be a Jamboree awards ceremony. For more information on the Jamboree, visit the society's website.

On Saturday, the Academy of Model Aeronautics, a national organization for model airplane enthusiasts, presents an award to recognize the Aerodome as a National Aermodeling Historic Landmark. On Saturday evening, there will be a special 5:30 p.m. dinner and fundraiser in the Aerodome's History of Flight museum to celebrate 50 years of the Jamboree.

The dinner includes a slide show, a silent auction, and presentations from some of the first-ever Jamboree participants. Tickets are $30 each and will be on sale at the Aerodome, organizers said. Visit the Aerodome website for details.

Biplane rides will be available during the weekend from 4 p.m. to dusk. Shows and rides are weather permitting.

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome’s museum and grounds are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. and features more than 60 antique airplanes, dozens of vintage automobiles and more.
