POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Dutchess County women, men and even children can join the Women's Leadership Alliance on International Women's Day with a walk across the Hudson River to call for gender parity and to celebrate this year's theme, "Fit Women Make Fit Leaders."

The event will be Saturday, March 5.

International Women’s Day, which gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on the Poughkeepsie side of the Walkway Over the Hudson, is both a celebration of women around the world and an opportunity to educate people about the plight of women in other countries. Thousands of events occur not just on these days, but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

Pamela Edington, president of Dutchess Community College will be this year's the keynote speaker. Krista Jones of Sparrow’s Nest, the guest speaker, will announce the 2016 nonprofit of the year. Also speaking will be Pari Forood of Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.

The candidates for nonprofit of the year include: Astor Services for Children & Families; Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie; Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill; Girl Scouts -- Heart of the Hudson; and the Omega Women’s Leadership Center

Entertainment will be provided by the Poughkeepsie High School Choir conducted by Joe North, Kyleigh Rothmand and the Evergreen Chorus of the Sweet Adelines. Refreshments will be served by Sam's Club.

Shuttle service will be provided between the Highland and Poughkeepsie side of the walkway by The Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel & Conference Center.
