They are six large-scale photographs from his "Gas Stations" series. The exhibit is at the Edward Hopper House until Sept. 11.
Inspired in part by Edward Hopper's painting, "Gas" (1940), for the series LaChapelle created scale models using common, found objects, which he then photographed on location in the rainforest of Maui.
The work is a commentary on the reliance on fossil fuels and "the absurdity of our attempts to harness nature," explains a release.
Born in Hartford, Conn., in 1963, LaChapelle’s photography career took hold in the early 1980s, when Andy Warhol gave him his first job at Interview Magazine.
He gained recognition for his celebrity photographs, music videos, and films before returning to his roots in fine art photography.
LaChapelle's recent work evokes popular culture and the work of masters from art history, from Hopper to Ed Ruscha.
Entry to the exhibit is free for members, otherwise adults pay $7, seniors, $5, students $2, and kids under 16 enter free.
The hours are noon to 5 p.m. daily at Edward Hopper House, North Broadway, Nyack, N.Y.
