Historical Society Honoring 'Beacons' Of History

BEACON, N.Y.  -- The Beacon Historical Society is honoring a longtime mayor and a business that has helped preserve the history of the city.

The inaugural "Beacons of History" awards will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Fishkill Creek at the Roundhouse at 2 East Main St. in Beacon. Clara Lou Gould, who was mayor for 17 years is being honored. Gould is the longest serving female mayor in the history of New York.

Hudson Beach Glass is also being honored. The business was one of the first to reclaim the city's Main Street building stock, turning the former Lewis Tompkins Hose Company firehouse into a gallery and glass-blowing demonstration studio in 2003.
